Boliden (BOL) is a Swedish mining company divided into a mining and smelters division. Primary extraction is of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) with lead, gold and silver as by-products. BOL is the 3rd largest Cu producer in Europe (relatively small player globally), the 8th largest Zn producer and 6th largest Zn smelter operator globally. End users are primarily the automotive and construction industry with China being the largest consumer globally. Earnings are driven by metal prices and treating & refining charges (TC/RC). TC/RC revenue is driven by smelter demand resulting from metal concentrate mined globally. Primary drivers of growth remain urbanization and infrastructure & housing investment in emerging economies. Key risks include FX (appreciating SEK), mining cost inflation (particularly energy) and commodity price volatility. To this end, BOL hedges metal production, dollar exposure and enters long term contracts for smelter revenue.
