Ericsson is a leading provider of telecommunications networks (30-40% market share of global infrastructure), professional services and multimedia. Ericsson also produces handsets (Sony Ericsson) and chipsets through the joint ventures with Sony and ST-NXP. Ericsson operates in a highly competitive industry characterized by competition on price, service and rapid technological changes. Chinese vendors such as Huawei and ZTE have lately been more aggressive in the competition for market shares in the wireless infrastructure market. On the demand side factors such as network operator’s consolidation and network sharing by several operators could result in investment delays and increased bargaining power to the operators; thus, further adding to the price pressure and competition. Future growth drivers are the demand for IP-based mobile broadband driven by increased data traffic, subscriber growth in emerging markets supported by cheaper handsets and services targeting customers’ operational efficiency. Services were the fastest growing and most profitable area for Ericsson in 2010.
