Shell Oil Co. (RDSA, RDSB) said Friday flaring earlier in the day caused a release of sulfur dioxide to the atmosphere at its San Francisco-area oil refinery in Martinez, Calif.
The event was called in to the California Emergency Management Agency shortly after it occurred at 12:20 local time and hadn't yet been contained. The cause of the flaring wasn't known, the report said.
No other details were provided, and a Shell representative wasn't immediately available to comment.
The Martinez refinery is able to process up to 165,000 barrels of crude oil a day.
