European leaders, both politicians and businesspeople, should do more to support the euro by stressing why a joint currency is so important, Royal Ahold NV's (AH.AE) chief executive says in an interview published Thursday by Dutch daily Het Financieele Dagblad.
Dick Boer also calls for politicians to adhere to agreements and not try to change them shortly after they are made, especially about measures that are severe but necessary. The constant changing of positions by politicians hurts consumers' confidence in the economy and politics, Boer tells the paper.
Boer adds that a collapse of the euro as the joint European currency would be very bad. "That would be very harmful for Europe's competitive position. It would mean a big economic setback," the paper quotes Boer as saying.
